What is Hands-On Learning?

"You’ve got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your grandfather was."   -Irish proverb

Dynamy programs are designed to reflect the belief that the best education involves the whole person in the learning process. We believe that people must learn to take a leadership role in their own lives, to gather information about themselves, and to make intentional decisions based on that information.

Hands-On Learning at Dynamy means that young people are given an opportunity to test interests and aptitudes, to be involved in a meaningful internship and develop a community with their peers while having the support and guidance of trusted advisors, internship mentors, and staff members.

A fundamental part of our Hands-On Learning approach is the practice of letting our interns live and understand the consequences and outcomes of their choices. This means allowing students to fail, to achieve, to make mistakes and all-the-while to realize the strength and abilities within them.

You also discover questions to ask --What talents do I have? What skills do I want? What are my goals? How do I want to make a difference? -- and you seek those answers in the world around you. Your sponsors, advisor, and peers support you in finding your own path and learning from it. This support is one of the greatest strengths of the Internship Year. You learn from the people around you, your own reflection, and from the surprises of the moment.

Dynamy provides the framework for this type of learning through internships, adventure (and other 'new context') challenges, community-building and community action, personal reflection, future 'guidepost' planning (primarily college and vocational counseling), multiple non familial, intergenerational relationships, and in-depth holistic advising.
